Yokai: Japan's Supernatural Folklore in Art Presented by the Asian Art Society of the IMA

The Asian Art Society (AAS) of the Indianapolis Museum of Art will host lecturer Brett Duchon in a presentation on Yokai, the supernatural monsters of Japanese folklore. Ranging from the malevolent to the mischievous or even a token of good fortune, yokai are a perfect topic for the Halloween season. These creatures, taking the shape of animals, humans, or even inanimate objects, feature heavily in both traditional and contemporary Japanese art and folklore.
Brett Duchon spent many years in Japan for cultural studies and, during his master's degree, focused his research on yokai. Upon returning to Indianapolis, he curated a popular show with university ceramics majors from throughout Indiana called "Manifestations in Clay: Modern Interpretations of Yokai, the Supernatural of Japan". Join Brett and the AAS as he addresses this delightful and spooky topic that should make for a pre-Halloween evening full of fun and chills!
